Los Angeles: Actor Kate Winslet said many actors in Hollywood are afraid of coming out as gays as it will prevent them from getting heterosexual roles as actors. The Titanic actress said that she knows many homosexual people who have not been able to reveal their true identity as it would attribute to less work for them in the film industry. She called the notion that gay actors cannot play straight characters as “dated”, while adding that is should be criminalised.
“I cannot tell you the number of young actors I know — some well known, some starting out — who are terrified their sexuality will be revealed and that it will stand in the way of their being cast in straight roles. Now that’s f***ed up,” Winslet told The Sunday Times.
The Oscar-winning actor said that she knows a well-known actor, who just got a new agent, and that agent told the client, “I understand you are bisexual. I wouldn’t publicise that.”
“I can think of at least four actors absolutely hiding their sexuality. It’s painful because they fear being found out. And that’s what they say, ‘I don’t want to be found out’,” she said.
The stunning actress then said that she believes it is harder for men to come out in Hollywood as they are scared of not getting good roles.
Kate Winslet is known for her performance in films like Titanic, The Revolutionary Road, The Reader and Eternal Sunshine of Spotless Mind among others. The 45-year-old garnered critical acclaim with her performance in period drama Ammonite wherein she played a lesbian character. currently stars in HBO miniseries Mare of Easttown, where she plays the role of a small town detective.
