New Delhi: India on Tuesday logged in the highest daily surge of covid-19 cases with 1.07 new infections reported in last 24-hour even after Centre’s ‘extraordinary efforts’ to augment the virus.

According to daily health bulletins updates by various states and union territories, the nationwide tally of cases reported on Tuesday have crossed 1.07 lakh mark which makes for India’s highest ever surge since the beginning of the pandemic.

PM Modi post his meeting with health officials on Sunday urged people to actively participate in bringing down the recent spike by wearing masks and maintaining social distancing as health authorities have regarded severe laxity as the root cause of second wave of the virus in the country.

Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan  said that it seems like people have given Titanjali(abandon) to masks and social distancing.

Amid the steep surge in daily number of cases, Indian Medical Association on Tuesday wrote to Centre to avail covid-19 vaccine for all adults and asked to impose mini lockdown in order to curb the spread. However, later in the day, Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan ruled out the possibility of opening vaccination for all ages any time soon, saying that it’s their first priority to cover the most vulnerable groups. Besides IMA, Uddhav Thackeray and Arvind Kejriwal had called for the expansion of vaccination drive.

“The approach is that those vulnerable to mortality need to be covered soonest. The aim is to protect the most vulnerable. The aim is never to vaccinate whoever wants it, but always whoever needs it,” said Rajesh Bhushan.

India, currently in its third phase of Covid-19 vaccination, has started inoculating people above the age of 45 from April 1. In the first phase, which started on January 16, India inoculated healthcare workers with two vaccines – Covishield (Oxford-AstraZeneca’s vaccine manufactured by Serum Institute of India) and Covaxin (manufactured by Bharat Biotech Limited). The drive was further opened up to 20 million frontline workers from February 1 onwards. For the second phase, India expanded its drive and inoculated people above the age of 60 and those above 45 with co morbidities.
